Re: Anti-virus Options for Students

Mr. Yoka,

The NAC solution we have allows students to use a variety of different software but it is up to them to make sure they
know how to update it. If we have problems with a student's computer due to the antivirus software, we usually install
the software that we recommend. Students who do not have any kind of AV software installed are asked to install the
product we chose.

In regards to the time spent supporting this, it usually isn't too bad from what I can see working with our staff. The
worst thing is usually when the students remove their old AV software and it doesn't get completely removed, so our NAC
solution thinks they still have outdated AV, but that is a problem pretty much regardless of what software you choose.

Hope that helps!

Sven

Subject: [SECURITY] Anti-virus Options for Students

Our institution has started having the discussion of whether or not we will allow students to use anti-virus software
other than our corporate standard (McAfee).

Are other schools out there allowing students to use the AV programs of their choosing? If so, what impact has it had
on your help desk as far as support time/issues? If not, are you allowing students to choose from a limited,
pre-selected set of AV choices or forcing all of them to use one corporate standard AV program, enforced by a NAC
solution?

Thanks,
