You are absolutely right - Consider how differently Apple managed the
announcement that Jobs was stepping down. The company prepared the market
and, while there was a measure of surprise that it would happen 'now', the
company did not suffer in the market the way HP did. The company will face
significant challenges, as when any CEO that is inseparable from his company
departs, but it will have time to adjust its footing. I touched on that on
a separate entry called Pushing the Reset Button at Apple
(http://ozziepaezdecisions.com/2011/09/01/pushing-the-reset-button-at-apple-
jobs-steps-down/). These cases are instructive because lessons learned from
them can be applied to other contexts, including security, where the
unexpected can and almost certainly will happen, sooner or later. So, from
a security perspective, it is important to prepare the audiences
(stakeholders, media, etc.) over time; as with Apple, preparation and
effective response can help organizations bounce back, influence the story
and protect their credibility when things go wrong.

Ozzie, What announcement from HP are you referring to? Thanks, Karla

And notice that HP is almost totallly *not* able to do any spin control. The
rest of the world has decided what the announcement means, and what HP
thinks the announcement means is at best irrelevant.
