I agree Gary!  In the Bro-IDS[1] project, we're working on not only giving you tools to do this detection, but we're 
putting a lot of emphasis on making it much easier for you to extend it to suit your local environment.  

As a general comment for anyone interested, I'd be glad to listen to any particular monitoring requirements you have to 
see how we could possibly accommodate your situation with Bro.
