Data in Transit

Wondering if anyone would share their experience with data in transit
security - specifically, has anyone created a centralized (ex.
hub/spoke) solution, a successful decentralized model, or a mixture of
both for secure external and internal data transmissions?  

Also curious if anyone has utilized consultants with Higher Ed
experience in this space.

Thoughts/guidance is greatly appreciated!
