There are many companies, with multiple Thawte Notaries, which will be scrambling for an alternative to personal certs.

One can't help but wonder what will happen if Google should ever be bought out by a competing e-mail provider.

Apparently, they were bought out by VeriSign who chose to discontinue the service.  Ahhh corporate greed.
