Position Overview:

The IT Security Office (ITSO) is responsible for the overall
coordination, implementation, and assessment of information security at
the University of Kansas. The overall goal of ITSO is to achieve the
optimal level of confidentiality, integrity and availability of KU's
information assets and systems while providing a safe and secure
computing environment for research, teaching, learning, and the everyday
conduct of university business. 

This position will be in the Security Operations/Services unit of ITSO.
This unit is responsible for: Technical Security Control Planning and
Coordination, Daily Security Operations, SOC Operations, Security
Consulting, General & Technical Security Support, Monitoring &
Logging/Statistics, System/Application/Network Scanning & overall
Security Implementation. The incumbent will find themselves working on
both small and large scale projects while assisting teams within IT and
campus wide to achieve their goals. As information security is an
extremely fast paced field, ITSO team members are expected to research
new technologies and rapidly understand their uses and risks. 

 

The candidate will evaluate security equipment, projects, and procedures
to assure effective integration of security related systems, equipment
and operational/administrative processes.  They will perform planning,
technical design, implementation, configuration, administration, process
definition, and problem resolution functions to facilitates integration
of security architecture into IT infrastructure.       


To be successful requires excellent oral and written skills, project
management, strong people skills, and a results oriented attitude. In
all endeavors the incumbent must demonstrate the highest degree of
ethics and professionalism.  

 

DUTIES:

 

1.                  (35%) Develop, implement, and manage network based
security infrastructure

2.                  (20%) Consult on internal and campus-wide IT
projects as a subject matter expert 

3.                  (15%) Detects, investigates, documents and reports
actual or potential network security violations, intrusions or other
inappropriate use.

4.                  (10%) Reviews and maintains University of Kansas
information security policies and procedures; works closely and
cooperatively with other University staff members involved with
information security and privacy issues; participates in ensuring
security compliance with governmental regulatory requirements.

5.                  (10%) Maintains documentation related to the KU
Security Infrastructure

6.                  (5%) Supports the development and implementation of
the University security awareness program to ensure that the University
community is fully informed about information security issues.

7.                  (5%) Performs special projects and other duties as
assigned

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 

1.                  Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or computer
related field, or five years of computer systems and network
administration experience.

2.                  Two years technical administration and design
experience with servers, systems, and applications in an enterprise
scale IT environment. 

3.                  Two years technical administration and design
experience with IT security programs, best practices, and standards. 

4.                  Two years technical administration and design
experience with large scale tiered networks. 

5.                  Five years network protocol (TCP/IP & routing)
experience relating to both host systems and networks. 

6.         Five years of systems administration and hardening experience
on UNIX, Linux, Windows Servers, or Network Systems.  

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1.         Certifications in areas related to network management and
security (SANS,CISSP, CISA or other Security Certifications). 

2.         Familiar with advanced network routing protocols (BGP, OSPF,
RIP) 

3.         Management, design, and deployment experience with enterprise
grade firewalls, packet filters, and application layer inspection
systems.

4.         Experience with web application security best practices and
web application firewalls.

5.         Additional Technical Skills - Familiarity and/or experience
in the following areas:

*         Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems

*         Vulnerability Scanning (passive & active)

*         SIM/Security Event Correlation

*         Logging, monitoring, and auditing best practices

*         Load Balancers & Proxies

*         Packet Analysis

*         Wired & wireless security (WPA2 Enterprise, 802.1x)

*         Remote Access Technologies (VPN, Tunnels)

*         Authentication Systems (Radius, TACACS, LDAP)
