Re: Residential (Dorm) Network

Here at Maryville University we rely on a Network Access Control device
(Bradford's Campus Manager) to get our students up-to-date with patches
and software so that we can trust them just a little more. We don't
currently have ACLs between their network and ours. We do share the
same Internet connections because we have redundant ISPs to provide
fail-over. We decided that it was better for both of us to use both
ISPs for redundancy and shape our traffic to guarantee bandwidth for
academics, administration, and students.

So far it has worked well. We have the usual political battles between
student convenience and security with our NAC, so we are considering
putting some ACLs between the students and the rest of our internal
network to provide a little more protection should we lose the security
battle. Our combined Internet bandwidth has worked really well because
everyone has redundancy and we have the ability to adjust bandwidth on a
moment's notice if the students need more or if the academic spaces have
a big project going on.

Subject: [SECURITY] Residential (Dorm) Network

I am interested in hearing how your University handles their Residential
Network. Is it isolated through Firewalls, ACLS? Does it have
dedicated bandwidth? How do users access internal College resources?
Do they access resources through a VPN?

Thanks,
