Subject: [SECURITY] VASCAN Conference Announcement, 10/6-7/2008

The 2008 VA SCAN conference will be held October 6-7 in Blacksburg,
Virginia.
Virginia Tech is excited to be hosting this event in our new conference
center
and feel we have another outstanding program.  We encourage you to take a
look
at the preliminary schedule on the web site
(http://www.cpe.vt.edu/vascan2008/i
ndex.html) and consider attending.

It̵'s hard to believe this will be the 5th year for the VA SCAN conference,

but attendance and participation by colleagues throughout the region and
State
make it possible for us to hold this annual meeting.  We hope you will share

this information with colleagues and will register early.  If you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact Wayne Donald (wdonald () vt edu or

540 231-7694).

VA SCAN 2008 Conference

The fifth annual VA SCAN conference will be held Monday and Tuesday, October

6-7, 2008 at The Inn at Virginia Tech. Visit the beautiful mountains of
Western Virginia and attend what has become an annual event for discussing
current security issues and sharing ideas on effective IT security
practices.

WHO should attend?  IT managers, IT security professionals, technical staff,

and auditors from Higher Education, K-12, Government, and Law Enforcement
will
find VA SCAN 2008 helpful in their short and long-term plans dealing with
technology security issues.

WHERE?  The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center is located on

the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. The facility (July 2005
opening) provides refined surroundings for conferences and business
meetings,
while giving you access to state-of-the-art technology.

REGISTRATION:  The VA SCAN 2008 conference registration is $125;
pre-registration is required. Registration deadline is September 29, 2008.
In
addition to the conference program, the fee includes a Monday evening
reception, and lunches and breaks for both days.

LODGING:  Participants are responsible for making their own lodging
reservations. Lodging rooms with special rates are being held at The Inn at
Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center, and Hawthorn Suites. Please be
sure to mention the name of the conference to insure the conference rate.

Keynote speaker:  Peter Adler is a partner in a Washington, D.C. law firm,
where he is a member of the Privacy, Security and Data Protection practice
group. As part of his practice, he assists higher education institutions in
establishing and operating effective information security, privacy and IT
compliance programs. He has been a frequent speaker at national higher
education conferences in recent years.

Conference Program:  On Monday there will be three concurrent tracks holding

presentations: Management track, Technical track, and Audit track. The
second
day will have sessions in the Management track, while the Technical track
will
hold two workshops.  The Audit Track will not have sessions on the second
day.  A preliminary schedule with presentations is available from the web
site.
