Re: music download discounts

While we did hope that it would reduce the number of complaints, we were more interested in being able to say we were
doing something, and offering some sort of legal alternative for our students. Culture shift happens slowly. Most
students learn about illegal file sharing at home or from their friends. It will take time and awareness education for
them to make a shift.

I wonder is a service like Ruckus will actually have
any impact on the number of DMCA notices we receive.
My suspicion is it would not, but I'd love to hear
I'm wrong.

My guess is that there are plenty of options for
listening to music on your computer, but what students
want is being able to copy that music to their mp3
player. They also want to be able to do this for
free, since their perceived competitors offer "free"
downloads. Until you can make significant changes
to the culture, whereas downloading material has
a social stigma, "free" is going to trump a buck
a song.
