Secure disposal of old backup tapes

Hello

We have a number of old backup tapes (200+) that need to be disposed.
Of course, the tapes are unencrypted and many contained personally
identifiable information.  I am wondering how other institutions are
handling the disposal of old backup tapes.  Do you contract with a
company for this type of service or do this in-house?  Any information
or suggestions would appreciated.
