[Please excuse the cross-post for anyone on the ICPL list.] [I especially want to draw to your attention the EDUCAUSE2006 session on "Good Digital Citizenship" that will include a discussion of some of the existing technology tools for addressing P2P filesharing.] *******************************************
I have been receiving a lot of questions this week about the Congressional Hearing on Tuesday about "The Internet and the College Campus: How the Entertainment Industry and Higher Education are Working to Combat Illegal Piracy". Below are some summaries and resources for anyone who wishes to explore further: Witness List and Testimony http://edworkforce.house.gov/hearings/109th/21st/piracy092606/wl092606 .htm Press Release from the U.S. House Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness http://edworkforce.house.gov/press/press109/second/09sep/piracy092606. htm News Item from the American Council on Education Higher Education and National Affairs Newsletter http://www.acenet.edu/AM/Template.cfm?Section=HENA&TEMPLATE=/CM/Conten tDisplay.cfm&CONTENTID=18395 There will be several sessions at the EDUCAUSE Annual Conference (October 9-12) in Dallas on the related topic of P2P filesharing: Getting from Illegal P2P File Sharing to Good Digital Citizenship <http://www.educause.edu/knowledgepathfinder/9161?Product_Code=E06/SES S014&ID=Copyright%2C+Filesharing%2C+P2P+and+Piracy&Corp_Exhib=&Corp_Wk sp=&Corp_Pres=&Sort=PRODUCT%5FFUNCTION%2EBEGIN%5FDATE%5FTIME%2CPRODUCT %5FFUNCTION%2EEND%5FDATE%5FTIME%2CPRODUCT%5FFUNCTION%2ESEQ%2CTITLE&Ses sion_Numbers=2%2C3%2C4%2C+6%2C+7%2C8%2C9%2C10%2C11%2C12%2C+14%2C+15%2C 16%2C17%2C18%2C19%2C20&Itin=False> 10:30 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. Tuesday (Note that this session will include Cheryl Elzy, dean of libraries at Illinois State University, who testified at the recent Congressional hearing.) Chancellor Kirwan from the University System of Maryland said, "We need to be careful not to throw out the baby with the bathwater.") I also suspect that P2P filesharing and other copyright issues will be a topic of discussion during the Policy and Law Constitutent Group Meeting on Wednesday, October 11th, 2:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. (see http://www.educause.edu/E06/Program/9155?PRODUCT_CODE=E06/CG32).
