Some Microsoft email clients insist on using port 465 for secure SMTP, despite the fact that this has been deprecated by the IANA.
As I said, the *canonical* answer. Sites that insist on running software that does things in a non-standard way, and which can't support the standard way, are on their own. RFC2476 nailed down 587 for the 'Submission' port back in December 1998, and RFC2487 defined SMTP over TLS the next month. It's been *6 years* for the vendor to Get It Right, and for users to deploy it. ********** Participation and subscription information for this EDUCAUSE Discussion Group discussion list can be found at http://www.educause.edu/groups/.
