I really am of the opinion that if we can get to
the point where everyone knows his or her role in the protection of
information, we won't have much need for security specialists.

Isn't this what power users said about programmers in the 1970s?

There will always be a need for security specialists. Now and then
something 'interesting' happens here and I need to be able to call
someone who deals with 'interesting' things all the time. Maybe it's a
lawyer, an expert witness, a forensics expert or someone who has the
right equipment and training to pull data off dead hard disks.

Having said that, educating people will reduce the boring and tedious
parts of my job, so I'm all for it. I just don't think the goal of
complete elimination of security specialists is realistic. For most of
us, there's always someone out there who knows more than we do about a
particular field and it's nice to think you can phone them when you
get out of your depth.

cheers,
 Jamie
