Campus network security the subject of new study

The Arizona board of Regents has commissioned a study to find methods of
bolstering the computer networks at Arizona's university system. The study
is a direct result of news in early March that over 50,000 social security
numbers had been stolen from a database at the University of Texas. Arizona
officials estimate that the system spends $400,000 each year on issues
related to hacking, copyright violations, and email spam. The University of
Arizona averages 200,000 hits a day from people trying to find
vulnerabilities, estimates Edward Frohling, the university's principal
network systems analyst.
