I used to trust Consumer Reports until they published reviews of antivirus and antispyware products. They've gotten slightly better at it, but still the methods and conclusions are questionable. That doesn't mean the Ionic Breeze is good or bad. I'm just no longer convinced Consumer Reports is as scientific in their testing methodologies as they claim (or that they have a complete understanding of what it is they are testing, what they are testing for, or even why they are testing - except to sell subscriptions). -- Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Aitel" <dave () immunityinc com> To: <dailydave () lists immunitysec com> Sent: Tuesday, January 24, 2006 8:47 AM Subject: [Dailydave] Consumer's Union -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 There was an article in the New York times this weekend about Consumer Reports and Sharper Image. For those of you not familiar with Consumer Reports, it's a well regarded magazine here in the States that does reviews of various products scientificially. In a recent article, Consumer Reports claims that the Ionic Breeze product is completely ineffective at cleaning air. Of course, Sharper Image sued them, and the suit was dismissed. It's apparantly not against the law to tell people the truth in some fields. In a later study, Consumer Reports looked at ionizing air cleaners, and said that not only do they not clean air, but they introduce potentially harmful amounts of ozone. Sharper Image's CEO called this advisory "irresponsible." - -dave -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFD1i8UB8JNm+PA+iURAjnGAKCWsth34xLYzKmo5nwHfmIw0Lvq7QCfQMQK NffShSlEtmfuxyJpkigPqec= =Spt1 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
