Samba, Python, and two lions going head to head.

One thing I noticed is that people spend a lot of time talking about memory allocation, which could be avoided with a pure higher language approach. I really do think a pure-Python Samba would be a cool thing, but at this point that's basically unthinkable. The main benefit would probably be developer time, and of course, security. I'm not sure why Samba is written in C come to think of it. Perhaps there is a thread on that as well.
Regardless, the Samba team is doing some neat work, even if you don't care about Samba itself. It's interesting to see how a large open source project works, and how what personalities work in that context.
