Well, if you really want a flame war about languages, I'd be happy to accomodate. Probably doesn't matter, though. Samba's interesting for several reasons, I agree. One is the password generation stuff - they have the password generator you'd bolt to your cracker to learn that people use lamer 4 character 802.1X passwords for PEAP-MSCHAPv2, for example. http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba-technical/2005-January/038989.html has a really neat thread to read. One thing I noticed is that people spend a lot of time talking about memory allocation, which could be avoided with a pure higher language approach. I really do think a pure-Python Samba would be a cool thing, but at this point that's basically unthinkable. The main benefit would probably be developer time, and of course, security. I'm not sure why Samba is written in C come to think of it. Perhaps there is a thread on that as well. Regardless, the Samba team is doing some neat work, even if you don't care about Samba itself. It's interesting to see how a large open source project works, and how what personalities work in that context. -dave _______________________________________________ Dailydave mailing list Dailydave () lists immunitysec com https://lists.immunitysec.com/mailman/listinfo/dailydave
