I'm with Dave, the AV industry is extremely hostile and tries to kill any sort of information medium they do not control.. that's how business is done these days. Nothing against the AV-ers themselves.. these are just the facts of life.
Between maintaining personal status by keeping others out and business concerns by hyping threats and making sure others don't know squat about them, the AV industry is one of the closest and most snobbish around. Most of the people themselves are actually rather nice and drink rather dark beer, like anyone should.
As to writing viruses, personally I believe it isn't necessary and it isn't needed, but it is potentially useful for a researcher. anyone who says otherwise is living in a different world.
As to people who write the viruses and do more than just writing, they are called VX-ers. They are blackhats. Why should we care how they call things? I believe naming things different than what the VX-er intended is what I'd do, given a choice.
Some of the VX-ers are annoying kiddies, others are some of the best coders and reversers around. That doesn't change the facts of what their creations, once out in the open, cause.
