You could always leave Milwaukee... ;)
That's probably not be such a bad idea.

A fallacy known as the "geographic cure". I personally know close to a
hundred people employed in the computer technology field in Montana. A
very, very tiny fraction of the total.

I moved from Milwaukee to Boston earlier this year for a very interesting security job. The problem with being a developer in Milwaukee is not one of finding employment, rather one of finding interesting employment. Milwaukee has a handful of very large companies that do financial services (Metavante) and systems (Johnson Controls and Rockwell), and a tiny group of smaller companies that primarily service the bigger ones.

The kinds of jobs that pay well are invariably boring and repetitive, and the interesting work pays almost nothing. There's not a lot of VC in Milwaukee, nor a large amount of innovation.

Additionally, since the tech job market in Milwaukee is so small, many employers will treat you like dirt, as they know you have nowhere to go. The fine people at the Lakefront Brewery will help you cope with this situation.

Moving to Boston, which has thousands of companies and a history of innovation, means that my skills are in demand, my salary is up 35% , and I can take my pick from the variety of interesting and stimulating work available.

My liver has thanked me for it.
