Re: Building a surveillance system for a house with a do-it-yourself NVR

I have experience using the server software Motion for Linux over some years including right now. Zoneminder also uses
Motion or portions of it IIRC.

http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome

The key to the entire thing is to make sure the camera gets good video. Garbage in = garbage out. You can do this with
almost any kind of network camera as long as it produces an mjpeg stream I believe. Motion also allows you to use USB
cameras as well as video capture cards (booktree 878 type stuf works excellent). If you get a multi channel dvr card,
be sure each channel uses it's own chip (one bt878 or similar per input on the card), otherwise you will find yourself
disappointed to find only one input at a time can be viewed/recorded.

With network cameras, there is always security risks involved as most do not use ssl and seem to use some sort of
htaccess type authentication.. Motion uses the same type of auth to host streams to web browsers. I have yet to see a
dedicated dvr that uses ssl for it's web interface as well.

Hope this helps!

Dave and Pranab,

I am thinking about doing this in my house as well however I wanted to
set up a hybrid system using a few wireless and wired technologies.

Are there wireless cams that do 802.1.x authentication?
What is the security like on cams that run on the 'zwave' technology?
What about the x10 which is similar? (these are home automation
technologies)

I read an article that someone can come plug into to your exterior to
your house and gain access to these devices. Can anyone make any
comments regarding this? I would be very interested

Hi all,

I apologize if this is off topic since I am dealing with a home situation
here. I am considering implementing a surveillance system for my house. I
plan to use IP cameras. Yes, I already have a network in place and have
figured out the placement of the cameras.

The network video recorder is proving to be the most expensive bit of
equipment in the whole setup. I was wondering if it is possible to use a
desktop pc instead. I would connect the cameras to a switch and have a
desktop pc interrogate the cameras and relay the feeds in real-time to a
television such that a user can change channels to monitor the different
camera feeds. Yes, we get TV tuner cards but do we get software that does
something like this? I need non-computer savvy users to be able to monitor
the cameras.
