Ryan,
I have been looking into the same thing. You can send syslog to an external source however, depending on what you are logging it can get expensive. By expensive I mean taxing on the system from a performance perspective. My needs revolved around monitoring access to objects. Considering the raw volume of storage and the number of accesses you can end up hitting the system pretty hard forwarding events. If you opt to do it watch for performance degradation.
