Eric,

You can turn off the ability to access ad-hoc networks in XP by changing some settings under properties in the network 
connections area. I'm not sure if that's what you're getting at though. I know that something we do as standard 
procedure on all of our laptops to protect against the whole "Free Public Wifi" quirk.

You might want to try asking on the wireless forum.
