What happens after certificate expiry

Hello,

I have a web application, that runs on SSL with the help of a Verisign
certificate. The validity period is for 365 days. What will happen once the
certificate expires ? Will the application still encrypt the channel ? In my
case i have a Tomcat server   and IE, Firefox are the browsers for the
application.
