RE: Designing Network Security

Network design and security is subject to much opinion though there are
of course best practice to consider and be adhered to. My advice is to
have a full understanding of what is required on the network before
allowing the "Network Nazis" to have full reign over design and
implementation. It is all to common for designs to change in mid stream.
Additionally usability requirements often dictate turning firewalls into
swiss cheese. 

Security is always a balancing act in real world networks, make sure you
consult all parties that will be affected once an initial design has
been created prior to implementation.

         How does one go about designing Network Security.
We need to redesign the network and the focus will be on protecting the
network from external attacks as well as from malicious internal users.
Working on the policies.
Have to concentrate on protecting the IP also since we are a R&D center.
