Google is a notorious data miner. They archive and resell an astounding amount 
of both personal, and general information. Regardless of what they claim.  
they'll get around the "don't share with outside interests" clauses, for 
instance, by striking contracts that make others legally "inside" interests. 
This is a common practice among internet portals and other providers.

OTOH, they're probably no more or less invasive than any other portal or 
provider. It all depends on what your needs are, and who you're trying to 
obfuscate your data from. And the Google setup IS pretty easy as I 
understand.
