In fact i wonder what do you want to do ??

You can test 2 vmware :
1°) Esx server
2°) Vmware Workstation

For example I'm testing Esx Server for Orange plateform to optimize backup servers !
And i'm not depending of OS environment .

Workstation must install on an existing OS (linux, windows)

If you are really fast, you can use the evaluation version of vmware workstation which lasts for 30 days.
