Re: FCC Asks For Comments On Internet Wiretapping

Personally, I believe the gov't is asking for WAY to much power. With
things like the Patriot act (and soon the INDUCE act) in place, we are
far beyond giving up civil liberties. I won't get into a political
debate however - this isn't the place. =)

Regardless if broadcast packets would be considered communication or
not, the fact that they would have the ability and right to monitor
such traffic in itself is the issue here. Lord knows they have passed
so many things on the shirt tails of "terrorist threat", soon we will
all be treated like a terrorist if the three letter organizations
THINK we MIGHT do something they don't like. Completely asinine IMO.

that shouldn't be your concern. The potential problem is the gov't
would have the opportunity to snoop on your traffic too and you would
have to "trust" that they aren't.

There is an article posted on Slashdot.org, regarding this issue.

Now my question is, if this is to be setup in a similar fashion to telephone wiretapping, what is to happen with
broadcasted packets sent or received by the tapped connection?
Beyond the fact that probably 80%-90% of all internet broadcasts would contain little to no useful data top
incriminate someone, this still could be an issue. Say for example, I am connected to the internet through the same
broadband ISP as someone that is being "tapped". Now this person is receiving broadcast messages from myself, for
DNS items and so on. Will my broadcasts count as communication with this person?

This was just a dumb thought I had when reading the posting.
