getting away with it is simple: the computers and network are owned by the company and the company can do what they want with those assets.
They are used in a workplace. US Labor Law (might not apply if you're not *in* the US, but there may be a local equivalent) includes provisions regarding privacy in the workplace, which ownership of the equipment DOES NOT trump. Make sure your company legal advisor has approved any plans to deploy something like this -- it's a whole lot cheaper than defending in a federal lawsuit, even if you eventually win. Dave Gillett
