Re: Wireless Card config for Searching APs

I would tend to agree in that Lucent/Orinoco/Avaya/Prism(now) cards are
worthwhile using. I have owned the following cards: Orinoco, Netgear, SMS,
Cisco, Linksys. In order, I found that the Orinoco (esp. the "gold" [128
bite encrypted]) cards worked best when war(anything), with Linksys being a
close second (I've found that Linksys works best with the Sharp Zaurus line,
of which I have one -- very useful when attempting to sniff wireless
networks, which I use legitimately for my employer). I have found that the
older Cisco cards, Netgear and SMS -- all choked under heavy loads or
usages.

If using Linux, Orinoco and Linksys are, by far, the most popular and widely
used of any of the wireless 802.11<x> cards.

Just a littl bit of info from 'da field. Cheers.

I tend to like the Orinoco cards; Prism based cards also work, IIRC.

In my opinion, Linux is better, as long as you have driver support and
that driver supports putting it into radio mode (rfmon mode).

When you are war[driving|walking|sailing|biking] you are using your card
as a passive radio first in raw mode (rfmon mode), to detect networks
transmitting in the 2.4ghz band.

Hi there!

I would like to know what is the best config for a Wireless Card for
searching APs in a building.
I´m using NetStumbler and had found my own AP, but my card was
configured with my network settings. To find other ones, do I have to
set an IP or use DHCP? What is the windows network configuration to use?
I know that the SSID must be ANY or (NULL), right?
I have an LG W1100N Prism2 Card (Windows XP).
I haven´t tried to use it in LINUX... does Linux do the job better than
Windows XP?
Thanks.
