I have used languard but it is no where near as good of a solution as a properly deployed SUS setup.

I would reccommend using third party software like LANguard N.S.S. It has a 
patching feature that will scan the system and deploy the patches to 
not-up-to-date machine. You could use MBSA to scan the system for missing 
patches and then download them.
