While I agree with this, you can up the ante by combining SpamAssassin with other peices of software like ClamAV (GPL anti virus software.) The best "umbrella" I've found is MailScanner. It sits between two mail queues and scans your mail for spam and viruses using SpamAssassin and your choice of AV software (it supports a lot.)
