Robert,

I'm having a little trouble understanding your issue(s) here...

I am about to put a Windows XP Pro based Dell laptop into a wireless
network for the first time.

I would like to be able to capture details of the transactions that
occur when the computer is introduced in to the wireless environment.

Have you thought about just putting a sniffer on the network, either on the system itself, or on another system?
Ethereal is a great, and it's free.

I need some guidance in what software is available that will allow
incoming and outgoing communications to proceed in a "normal" fashion
but prevent my machine from being compromised to the extent that some
or all of the captured information is lost.

Based on what you've asked for, I'd recommend a sniffer to satisfy the first portion of your request...though it won't
do anything to prevent your system from being compromised.

I would like freeware (please finish laughing before you reply.)

Why would anyone laugh b/c you're asking for freeware?
