Actually the -kernel- is in different versions, that is 2.4.21 is the current 
stable tree. 2.4.22 is currently tagged as release candidate 2 (prepatch 
level). Chris is right when saying kernel version 2.6 is stell in the beta 
phase (test 3).
The "linux version" which was pointed out is regarding the distribution 
version. Mandrake is currently in version 9.1. RedHat's and SlackWare's 
distribution is of version 9. SuSE is still in 8.2.

To answer the server/workstation question, there is no real difference in 
installing linux as a workstation or a server. Those differences are "just" 
regarding the kernel, security and software features compiled, added or 
installed.
