Not every machine is included in a zone file, ARP is only useful on the 
local segment and ICMP (ping) may be blocked so you're going to need to 
take a more active (possibly distributed) approach.

You mention including it in your code, but you don't mention what kind 
of code (C, perl, whatever). Is there some reason you don't want to 
'wrap' some of the great tools already available? Unless you're creating 
a substantially improved wheel, it's probably not worth re-inventing.
