The point of the exercise is not so much to show how well E.week can harden a unit or set of units, but that it can be done.
I don't think eWeek has any kind of agenda here, so far as proving that web apps can be hardened, etc. I think the point, for them, is to generate publicity so that they get more advertisement and subscription money. Whether they end up writing an article entitled "eWeek Apps Prove Unhackable!" or "Wily Hackers Defeat eWeek Apps", it all works out the same for them.
