Snort as a HIPS

All this inline talk has got me wondering...my understanding of inline 
is:

Use afpacket with interface pairs where snort is used to "bridge" the 
pairs (NOT kernel bridge).  This will catch all packets.
Use nfq AND a single iptables table which will catch any packets sent 
to the table queue.

So...as a hips I'd want two tables looked at.. my INPUT and OUTPUT 
tables...is there a way to do this without needing two running snort 
instances?  Thanks.
