I don't necessarily agree with that. I feel like packages, and
especially linux RPMs have too many dependancies built in. This
results in making me chase my own tale when I want to upgrade just one
thing, forcing me to upgrade everything and anything.

Case in point: Last time i tried to install Snort 2.1.3 from RPM on a
newly installed Redhat Enterprise 3.0 machine, it said it needed a
newer version of libpcre, then when i tried to upgrade that it told me
that it needed a newer version of glibc. I attempted to upgrade glibc
through rpm and only after forcing rpm to do it, after it complained a
few times, did I realize that rpm is linked against libc libraries and
I was essentially asking it to uninstall and reinstal a part of
itself. Of course rpm core dumped, I was stuck with a machine that
thought it had two versions of libc on it at the same time, but could
use neither and I couldn't do anything on that box since. Had to
rebuild. Luckily it was just a test machine.

Now, had I just pulled down the source and compiled it myself none of
this would have been an issue.
