Thanks for the link Erek,

So the article talks about a way to Confirm Database Logging by issuing the
following statement.  This shows I can connect to the db but there are no
records in the event table.

echo "SELECT count(*) FROM event" | mysql snort -u root -p

Enter password:
count(*)
0

I also use phpMyAdmin to administer this mysql server.  When I change to the
snort database I see the following error at the bottom of the page:

Error
The additional Features for working with linked Tables have been
deactivated. To find out why click here

When I click on the 'here' link it shows the following:

PMA Database ... not OK[ Documentation ]
General relation features Disabled

Is this the cause of any of my problems??
