yup, I changed directories using cd c:\Snort before I ran snort. However, it looks to me like the snort executable is in c:\Snort\bin. So, now I changed it to it, and run it again. Now a new window pops up and says: "snort.exe - Unable to locate component. This application has failed to start because ntwdblib.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem" This sounds odd to me, cause the ntwdblib.dll is in the same directory as snort.exe, which is the bin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Neil Dickey" <neil () geol niu edu> To: <olaflachowicz () yahoo co uk> Cc: <snort-users () lists sourceforge net> Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2003 9:38 PM Subject: Re: [Snort-users] 1.9.1 winxp home

When I try "snort" from the command line, instead of the list of commands, I get: 'snort' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.Does the C:\Snort directory exist in your path? If not, the OS won't find the executable when you try to run it. Change directories into C:\Snort before you try to run it and see if that helps. It should because Windows/DOS checks the current working directory for an executable before it tries those in the path. What you may want to do is set up a shortcut to Snort, with the correct path, working directory, and arguments. Then all you have to do is double-click the shortcut and you're running.
