Re: Stopping portscanning

HI Alberto:

Yes, I am using spp_portscan2, so my question was something like this:

I have a RULE for the Kazaa traffic, and the "flex response" is the "tcp
reset".

Now, for the "portscan2" plugin, how do I send the same "tcp reset"??
Or, there are any other way to stop a portscan using Snort or some plugins??

And I am going to move the portscan2 parameters to high numbres, so the web
transactions are not broken (I hope).

Thanks,.

How are you getting these portscan alerts? via spp_portscan/2 or via
rules? You would have to configure ignorehosts so you wouldn't be
reseting valid connections. Though inadvertently you might reset valid web
traffic.

Recommendations:
1. Either use SnortSam, Hogwash, or Snort-inline.
2. Play with spp_portscan threshold, ignorehosts before putting into
   production.

Maybe the rest of the gang can recommend something else.

Hi:

I am using Snort to detect Kazaa and Gnutella trafic, and to send a TCP
Reset to both IPs when the Snort detects the traffic, we have been able
to lower the traffic in our "Internet 2" serial (E3-34mbps) from
10-12mbps to 1-2 mbps.

Now I am seeing a lot of portscans, so I am looking for some way to stop
that portscanning, I am not sure if there is some way to send TCP_RESETs
or HOST_UNREACHABLE icmp's.. do you have any way of stopping those
scans??

Thanks a lot.
