I use FBSD because I like their package management and the hardware support is maybe a wee bit broader, but I strip the FBSD install to no network services except ssh and harden it with a minimal install and kern_securelevel=3, plus IPF and such. If you don't want to do as much of that after the fact, OpenBSD is the way to go. There are probably some other pros and cons beside that, but these were the main reasons for my choice, plus as a lot of folks have mentioned it just comes down to this is what I'm comfortable using. --shawn

I haven't done any metrics, but I can say with some degree of certainty that the difference between any *BSD is sure to be negligible. OpenBSD is probably the crowd favorite, mainly because it's easy to strip down and secure as hell with minimal tinkering. Speed might be a debatable topic, if we were talking *BSD vs. [Insert MS Crap Operating System Here], but since we're not... Why not try 'em all and see what you like? It won't cost you anything!-----Original Message----- From: spyguy [mailto:spyguy703 () earthlink net] Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2002 1:39 PM To: snort-users () lists sourceforge net Subject: [Snort-users] FreeBSD or NetBSD for a sensor No OS wars please. Just real advice and logic. Which OS would be ideal? I can use either. I am comfortable with either. Didn't some make a claim that FreeBSD has faster stack? I am aware that OpenBSD is secure and every line of code reviewed... -spyguy ------------------------------------------------------- This sf.net email is sponsored by: Jabber - The world's fastest growing real-time communications platform!
