Hi,You should ask the prof to apply occam's razor to this situation. Did he leave the key unattended? Maybe he needed to pee and left it in a workstation; it would only take a few seconds to copy the contents.
Also consider that the leak may have come from somewhere else. What evidence do you have that the file was stolen from the key? Where else is it stored? Are there any hard copies floating around. Don't get blinded by the possible but unlikely event that someone trojaned a machine in the off chance that the USB key held the information they wanted. The simplest answer may be the right one, and usually is.
