Just be wary of the Intel TrueMobile cards that come with Dells. As of this summer, I believe that drivers for Linux did not exist. If that is the case, you could always go for an external card, but it wouldn't hurt to look into that. -----Original Message----- From: Todd Towles [mailto:toddtowles () brookshires com] Sent: Monday, December 13, 2004 12:42 PM To: Jaysen E. I have worked with many of the 8500 I believe that use Wide UXGA..didn't like it at all..and ended up turning it off.

In order to uses the full screen u have to run at 19200X1200. this stretches the screen causing graphics designed for 800X600 or 1024X768 to look horrible and blocky. I have scoured DELL support for a resolution but until graphics designers consider these strange resolutions the problem is here to stay. Currently having it working only with Windows XP SP2 and running MS Office 2003 smoothly. It has almost the same architecture than the D600 so I believe it can run Linux without troubles. I know this can be a very personal topic forsome people, but I have to throw it out there anyway. Here's my situation...I'm about to be attending a degree program in Information Assurance and Forensics. I also have my own business doing a variety of things computer related. At some point I would like to delve more heavily into vulnerability assesment, penetrationtesting, and possibly forensics. I'm looking for a laptopthat willbe flexible enough to meet all these needs. This is what my immediate plans for the laptop are: for mybusiness,I need to have some of the basic MS Office suite on it, aswell as MSPublisher. I plan on making it into a dual-boot machine with some flavor of linux. I don't care to use a live linux CDbecause I wantto be able to store logs, settings, and other data onto thedrive, andI hope to eventually use linux for everything except the MSstuff thatI have to use on occasion for my business. Because of the variety of things I plan on doing, I want to get one that has a serial and a parallel port in addition to theUSB that theypretty much all come with now. It would be nice to have atleast onePCMCIA slot as well. I plan to do some wireless networkassessment,so it needs to be wireless capable, but for my purposesbeing able toattach an external antennae for extra range isn't that important. What I'm looking at right now is the Dell Latitude D600. I've supported and purchased a lot of Dell desktop computers andhave beenvery happy with them and I have run Knoppix-STD on a Dell laptop andeverything ran well. The D600 has the ports I'd like. Any thoughts or recommendations? Any capibilities that youthink I'vemissed?
