It not been updated in a couple of years does not mean it does not work, did you tried to run it again and it failed? I need to set up a lab to demonstrate network scanning and want around 50 hosts. The last time I did this, quite a while ago, I used Netkit [1] but that hasn't been maintained for a few years so was wondering what other people were using to do this. The way I set the Netkit lab up last time I had a base machine and installed a bunch of services then hacked their start up scripts so they would only start some of the time, that way I got a good varied network which changed each time I rebooted it.
