Just now, I had released WinPcap 4.1.4 (a non-official name, also called NPcap 1.0.0) for testing. I have spent nearly one month to port it from NDIS5.0 to NDIS6.x. It can gain better performance than the official WinPcap (currently 4.1.3 version) under Win7 and Win8 (behaves the same as the old one under XP and Vista). I have rewritten the original NSIS installation script and packed the new WinPcap 4.1.4 into an EXE package, so you can test it easily. The installation package is given below: revision:31636 The installer only: https://svn.nmap.org/nmap-exp/yang/NPcap-20130806/installer/winpcap-nmap-4.1.4.exe
I didn't have luck with this on Windows 7 Professional. Here is what I tried. Double-click winpcap-nmap-4.1.4.exe. "WinPcap version 4.1.0.2001 exists on this system. Replace with version 4.1.0.3001?" Yes. 4.1.2 uninstaller. 4.1.4 installer. "Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software" Install this driver software anyway "Failed to create the npf service for Win7 and Win8. Please try installing WinPcap again, or use the official WinPcap installer from www.winpcap.org." OK. "Windows requires a digitally signed driver" Close. "Setup was completed successfully." Tried to run "nmap --iflist". "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer? Program name: Net Command". Yes. Nmap shows all my interfaces, with "<none>" in the WINDEVICE column. Try to scan: "dnet: Failed to open device eth0". Followed the command-line instructions at http://sabrent.com/support/knowledgebase.php?article=14. The F8 instructions failed to bring up any menu for me. After rebooting, the lower-right of the desktop shows: "Test Mode Windows 7 Build 7601" Double-click winpcap-nmap-4.1.4.exe. "WinPcap version 4.1.0.2001 exists on this system. Replace with version 4.1.0.3001?" Yes. Even though it said 4.1.0.2001, it actually uninstalled 4.1.4 and reinstalled it. "Failed to create the npf service for Win7 and Win8. Please try installing WinPcap again, or use the official WinPcap installer from www.winpcap.org." OK. "Windows requires a digitally signed driver" Close. Nmap scan. "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer? Program name: Net Command". Yes. "Failed to open device eth0" David Fifield _______________________________________________ Sent through the dev mailing list http://nmap.org/mailman/listinfo/dev Archived at http://seclists.org/nmap-dev/
