Does the same thing happen with Ncat? Try

ncat -v www.google.com 80

If it happens in Ncat too, then it indicates a problem with the build
rather than with the code.

it doesn't happen with ncat 5.21, that works fine.

Try 5.20 and see if that works. There were not that many changes between
5.20 and 5.21, so if that makes the problem go away there are fewer
things to check.

5.20 has the same problem, in fact so does 5.00! i guess i never noticed
as i rarely use hostnames:

# nmap insecure.org

Starting Nmap 5.20 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2010-01-28 01:13 CET
Failed to resolve given hostname/IP: insecure.org. Note that you can't
use '/mask' AND '1-4,7,100-' style IP ranges
WARNING: No targets were specified, so 0 hosts scanned.
Nmap done: 0 IP addresses (0 hosts up) scanned in 0.03 seconds

# nmap insecure.org

Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2010-01-28 01:16 CET
Failed to resolve given hostname/IP: insecure.org. Note that you can't
use '/mask' AND '1-4,7,100-' style IP ranges
WARNING: No targets were specified, so 0 hosts scanned.
Nmap done: 0 IP addresses (0 hosts up) scanned in 0.04 seconds

i'll try to see if i can find an old fedora10 install and see if it has
the same problems with 5.x
