You are obviously way more familiar with your code than I am, but looking over amap.c I didn't see anything that reminded me of nmap's pos_scan() function.... It is capable of reading one of the nmap output formats, but that definitely doesn't make it "derived" anymore than the fact that it is capable of acting as a port scanner does (which is the obvious similarity). Why did you choose to go out of your way to add that parenthetical?... *Finds the history of software projects and, well, things in general, fascinating and doesn't now that much about amap's origins.* Sincerely, Jay Freeman (saurik) saurik () saurik com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fyodor" <fyodor () insecure org> To: "testic" <testic () btinternet com> Cc: <nmap-dev () insecure org> Sent: Sunday, August 31, 2003 4:10 PM Subject: Re: nmap+V

I tried to compile it underLinux but it stuckIt is an unofficial patch that Saurik has made to Nmap to try and derive some service and version identification information from the ports that are scanned. Another (also partially nmap-derived) program that does this is Amap ( http://www.thc.org/releases.php ). I believe that this is a very useful feature that belongs in core Nmap. So I have written an alternative implementation that I hope to release in the next week or so. Cheers, Fyodor
