well, RFC 5952 _recommends_ against using that. Still, it's perfectly valid as of RFC 4291 and the approach can be 
found in quite large vendors' implementations, see http://labs.apnic.net/blabs/?p=309.

RFC 5952 explicitly states:
"all implementations must accept and be able to
   handle any legitimate RFC 4291 format."
