People are still saying that the "Internet is Broken" (even technical people, who don't really know how it works, but think they do). He ate his hat shortly after his prediction failed. To be strictly factual, Metcalfe had said in the column he wrote at the time that the internet would begin experiencing brownouts before the end of the year, and if it didn't he would *eat his column*. Which, when he turned out to be wrong, he did in a public setting. (IIRC he added salt and pepper to make it more palatable.) I'd point out that recently we're seeing a new wave of Internet backlash that, much like Stoll's, is coming from insiders: tech titans who don't let their kids use screens, pundits who boast about giving up their phones...it's an inversion of the early days. In 1995 London mobile phones were often called "poser phones" because the people who had them tended to such self-importance; today, only the very few (rich, staffed-up, who don't need to apply for jobs or anything else) can afford *not* to have a phone. wg -- www.pelicancrossing.net <- all about me Twitter: @wendyg
