To be strictly factual, Metcalfe had said in the column he wrote at the
time that the internet would begin experiencing brownouts before the end
of the year, and if it didn't he would *eat his column*. Which, when he
turned out to be wrong, he did in a public setting. (IIRC he added salt
and pepper to make it more palatable.)

I'd point out that recently we're seeing a new wave of Internet backlash
that, much like Stoll's, is coming from insiders: tech titans who don't
let their kids use screens, pundits who boast about giving up their
phones...it's an inversion of the early days. In 1995 London mobile
phones were often called "poser phones" because the people who had them
tended to such self-importance; today, only the very few (rich,
staffed-up, who don't need to apply for jobs or anything else) can
afford *not* to have a phone.
